A year of growth for Maritech Iceland

“We have a strong brand and product-market fit in both the fishing and aquaculture industry in Iceland” says Konráð Hatlemark Olavsson, Country Manager, Maritech.

In 2023, we really proved our solid position in Iceland. Key highlights of the year was the successful Maritech Cloud project at Arnarlax, Maritech Eye at UA/Samherji and UR Seafood, and the ongoing Maritech Cloud and Packing project with Matorka.

“The Icelandic seafood industry has been evolving over the decades, transitioning from being driven by manual labor to becoming digitalized and automated. All this new technology requires precise control and coordination. It is the role of companies like ours to make things easier and ensure that managers have the best access to clear information, automated documentation and user-friendly tools.

In fisheries, the need for data collection and processing begins at the quota level. Then, software is needed to monitor the catches, record their progress, and notify the relevant parties. Landing, processing, utilization, packaging, storage, sales, transportation, and traceability – all these are things that need to be recorded and managed. Within the aquaculture segment, we can help our customers ensure efficient handling of all processes from harvest to plate, with automated documentation through the value chain.”

We have satisfied reference customers and a lot more to offer the seafood industry in Iceland. We are looking forward to further growth and new milestones in 2024.

Útgerðarfélag Reykjavíkur

Customer case – Maritech Eye™

Útgerðarfélag Reykjavíkur got two Maritech Eye™ units early in 2023. One of them became the first ever onboard a fishing vessel,  Reykjavik-based Gudmundur i Nesi.

“We currently own only one vessel, but have had more vessels in the past. Over the last few years, we have lost a significant amount of fishing quota, which is why we can now only operate one ship. This circumstance motivates us to explore the path of detecting species onboard to provide data for estimating fish population size,” explains Þorlákur Gudjonsson, Innovation Manager, Útgerðarfélag Reykjavíkur.

Three main purposes

“We have worked closely with Maritech to develop robust algorithms, and we are now prepared to begin collecting statistics on species and quality while continuously enhancing our models.

Our intention is to use the data for three primary purposes:

Firstly, to collect information that can support more accurate estimates of fish populations, aiding the The Directorate of Fisheries, Fiskistofa, in the precise allocation of fishing quotas.

Secondly, to facilitate automated monitoring by fishing authorities.

Thirdly, to improve our onboard quality measurements.”

The results have exceeded expectations

“It has been surprisingly positive to observe how well things have progressed. Naturally, there have been challenges, as we have the first Eye unit that has ever been installed on a fishing vessel. We had to adjust the outer structure of the Eye to ensure it could withstand the conditions on board. However, Maritech responded promptly, so this issue was easily resolved.

We anticipate being able to utilize this technology in various ways. To give a few examples, we can use it to detect species, size, weight, sex, and potentially age, for research purposes as well as our own needs. Furthermore, this technology can be applied to fishing surveillance, where we would scan all the catch on the vessel. Initially, Maritech had reservations about the ability to distinguish between different species lying together on the belt, but the results have exceeded our expectations.

The third aspect involves using the Eye for advanced quality measurements, enabling us to identify issues such as excessive blood after bleeding, detect parasites on the fish, and estimate the firmness of Halibut flesh. We have been able to achieve all of this through the fish’s skin, demonstrating the extensive possibilities offered by this technology.”

Innovation in their backbone

There is a long-standing tradition in Icelandic fisheries of supporting the development of new technology. UR is no exception, ever since they heard about Maritech Eye™ they have been enthusiastic about our technology and exploring its potential applications.

As mentioned above, one of the primary reasons for initiating this project was UR’s experience with fishing quotas being reduced as a precautionary measure due to insufficient data.

“We aim to contribute to the collection of higher-quality data. The initial step involves gathering data and ensuring its quality so that it can be utilized in official fish population measurements, although this has not been finalized at this time. Quite recently, we had the Redfish quota reduced due to the lack of information, which poses significant challenges for us, particularly because Redfish are often caught while fishing for other species,” Guðjónsson says.

Þorlákur Ómar Guðjónsson, Innovation Manager, UR Seafood

We are proud to collaborate with Útgerðarfélag Reykjavíkur, and this partnership represents a big step forward in data-driven, sustainable fisheries management.

Samherji chose Maritech Eye

We are proud to announce that we have entered into an agreement with UA/Samherji in Iceland to install a Maritech Eye™ in their processing plant in Akureyri.

We have been working on a business case with them for a few months that has given great results, and the first unit is now ready to be integrated in one of their processing lines. When we have gained operational experience with integrating the first system, the plan is to extend the delivery to cover their total processing operations.

Blood, nematodes, gaping, black lining and shape

“For the last months we have been developing, with Maritech, a system that focuses on finding the main defects in fillets; blood spots, nematodes, gaping, black lining and shape deviations. The objective has been to identify the fillets that require no trimming and thus can go directly to portioning. This gives considerably more yield in production and reduces the manual workload for pre-trimming.” – says Sunneva Ósk Guðmundsdóttir, Production Manager UA.

“UA/Samherji has led the way in this project the whole time and has been pioneering the commercial utilization of this technology in whitefish processing. We are grateful for our cooperation, and we are confident we can make a great difference and create considerable value for Samherji.” – says Konrad Hatlemark Olavsson, Maritech Iceland.

Maritech Iceland is growing!

Say hi to Geir Thrainsson, who has joined Konrad Olavsson at Iceland Ocean Cluster as our newest member of Team Maritech.

As the entirety of Geir’s career has been in the seafood industry, his knowledge is ranging from several perspectives.

From early age, he gained firsthand experience from all parts of the seafood value chain – fisheries, production, processing, sales, management, and logistics. Combined with his Master’s degree in finance and logistics, there is no doubt he has the perfect background for his new role as Solution Architect in Maritech.

Fish factories and finance

«I started working as a teenager in fishing factories in Iceland. Later as a deck hand on trawlers. After that, I spent a while in seafood sales, before moving to London to take my MSc degree. Then I worked for a for a secondary fish processing company Newcastle, which supplied chilled seafood to all the major supermarket chains in the UK. When back in Iceland I worked for an IT company where I also worked closely with the fishing/seafood sector.”

In 2006, Geir headed for warmer weather and new challenges in Spain. There he spent 7 years as Supply Chain Manager and Branch Manager for companies operating large factory trawlers in West Africa. From 2016 and up until starting in Maritech, he had the role as Innova Product Specialist in Marel.

“He’s very humble as you can see, he forgot to mention that he also holds the title as ‘sailor’,” Konrad cuts in and laughs as he adds to his teammate’s list of achievements.

Team Maritech Iceland is growing! Say hi to Geir Thrainsson

Several new projects

“I am happy to be a part of Team Maritech,” says Geir, who visited his new colleagues in Norway to get to know and work closely with a cross-functional group. “We have high ambitions for our expansion in Iceland, so 2023 will be a very interesting year. I started working here in September, and a lot has happened since then. There are many potential projects, related to Maritech Cloud, which is my primary focus, and to production and IoT where we have Konrad and other specialists in our team.”

They have already exhibited a promising future, with several new signatures over the last months, for Maritech Cloud™ and Maritech Eye™. One example is Útgerðarfélag Reykjavíkur, the first company to use the Maritech Eye™ on two fishing vessels. The first Eye was installed during Christmas. Brim is another ongoing Eye project in Iceland, and we are looking forward to sharing another new project with you soon.

Útgerðarfélag Reykjavíkur chose Maritech Eye for automated sorting onboard fishing vessels

Iceland + Canada + Norway

While resources for the Iceland team are always at their disposal in both Norway and Canada, Konrad and Geir explain their position as that of a matrix.

“It’s a unique position to be in because we incorporate the beliefs and values that the whole company express, and we can always rely on the other offices when we need to. However, we get to develop and form our own flow of adaptability and flexibility to meet the customers’ needs based on their geographic location,” Konrad says.

“We get to build on the strengths from our colleagues in Norway and Canada, while having our focus and our own understanding at the front line in Iceland. This way, we are flexible and adaptable to our clients, which I think will provide us with much success now and in the future.”

The First Eye at Sea

Útgerðarfélag Reykjavíkur is the first company that have started using Maritech Eye™ onboard fishing vessels.

In December, Icelandic Útgerðarfélag Reykjavíkur installed the first of their two Maritech Eye units.

Their purpose is to automate the recognition and documentation of species in combination with size and other parameters related to various characteristics of whitefish catch.

The information will also be sent to the fisheries authorities in Iceland, who will use the data for research and estimation of stock size to optimize Icelandic quotas. Fiskistofa, The Icelandic Directorate of Fisheries, and Hafrannsóknarstofnun Íslands, the Icelandic Marine and Freshwater Research Institute, express that this project is very exciting to follow up on and that they will collaborate closely with Útgerðarfélag Reykjavíkur.

Automated catch registration

“We chose Maritech Eye™ because we see the possibility to solve the task of registering all our catch and believe it will greatly help optimizing our operations and give important research data to fishing authorities,” says Runólfur V Guðmundsson, CEO Útgerðarfélag Reykjavíkur.

“Útgerðarfélag Reykjavíkur is a leading Icelandic fishing company. They always try to use the latest technology on their vessels and work closely with all stakeholders in the industry. True pioneers,” says Konráð Hatlemark Olavsson, General Manager Maritech Iceland.

“As the industry is changing and the boats are getting bigger and more advanced, we see this as a natural part of the development – automated sorting, quality control, data collection, and documentation.”

Blood, Gaping, Fat, Nematodes ++

Automated and objective quality assessment, documentation and sorting, allows you to use your resources in a more cost-efficient way and improve your margins. With our standardized setups for salmon or whitefish, you can easily get started and get full return on your investment within just a few months. Ask us for an estimate.

Maritech Eye™ detects and documents blood spots, gaping (whitefish and salmon) melanin, salmofan, fat (salmon fillets), nematodes, and species (white fish fillets + round fish). As the scanning gives you objective documentation of the fish quality – in industrial speed, with a unique ID for each fish – you can easily provide this verification and traceability to your customers either they are wholesalers, supermarket chains or smaller buyers. If you buy fish from other, you will be able to verify that you pay for the quality you actually get.

Maximizing profit and quality

“This first vessel-based project is a milestone in several ways,” says Per Alfred Holte, VP Technical Solutions at Maritech. “Especially since the value creation at the fishing grounds is almost impossible to compensate for at a later stage in the seafood value chain. An increasing share of the quotas are caught by large vessels, it is crucial to ensure optimal operations at sea, data collection, and resource utilization.

With automated tools such as Maritech Eye™, both the industry and authorities ensure objective documentation and data collection, with considerably higher precision and efficiency compared to what you can get through a manual collection of random samples or inspection of complete catch volumes.”

Welcome to Maritech,
Brim and Hnyfill!

In early June, The Icelandic Fisheries Exhibition (IceFish) finally opened its doors to the public again.

It was great to be back! And a perfect occasion to sign our two new customers, Brim Seafood and Hnyfill.

Brim testing Maritech Eye

Brim Seafood is one of the largest seafood companies in Iceland, specializing in wild-caught Atlantic Cod, Deep Sea and Golden Redfish, Greenland Halibut, Saithe, Mackerel, and Haddock. The initial phase of our new Brim partnership is a Maritech Eye™ test project, where the main goal is to increase the efficiency of Brim´s production and processing.

“We have been in dialogue with Brim for a while now, and they have been very positive right from the beginning. They are a leader in innovation and responsible fishing and have positioned themselves as an influencer in the Icelandic seafood industry,” says Konrad Olavsson, Maritech Iceland.

A natural next step

“Exploring the capabilities of Maritech Eye™ is a natural next step on this path, as they are now the first Icelandic company to start testing hyperspectral imaging for objective quality documentation and species sorting,” Olavsson continues.

“As Maritech Eye™ is the only solution of its kind in the world, that can actually document the inside of whole, round whitefish, this gives our customers  a new competitive advantage in the global market – in addition to the efficiency gains, reduced waste, and other benefits such as the reduced amount of repetitive, manual tasks.”

Hnyfill + Maritech

A new Maritech Cloud customer was also signed at Icefish – Hnyfill will now be the first Icelandic company using Maritech Purchase & Sales for all their seafood trading processes.  Hnyfill is a fish processor located in Akureyri in north Iceland. They have been operating for nearly 30 years and are moving into further digitalization of their processes together with Maritech.

“I’m not sure if it’s coincidence or fate that the meaning behind the word Hnyfill is ‘to pioneer,’ which is exactly what our relationship with them will do,” Olavsson smiles.

“We are looking forward to getting them up and running and aim to build a strong partnership for the future.”

Connected in Boston

The connection between Maritech and Hnyfill was established at Seafood Processing North America in Boston in March earlier this year.

“At the show we met the owners of Hnyfill and other processing and sales offices in Iceland. They showed us great interest since they have the need to digitalize their companies – preferably with the same IT partner to be able to cooperate and transfer information with more ease. Choosing Maritech as their trading software partner might just be the first step in our cooperation.”

Ready, set, go – Iceland!

Less than a year after we established Maritech Iceland, we are now looking forward to hiring more people here.

“We have been very well received,” says Sales Manager Konrad Olavsson.

Since May 2021, Konrad has been leading Maritech Iceland, located at Iceland Ocean Cluster in Reykjavik.

For many, he is well-known as an experienced veteran of the seafood industry, as well as a (former) professional handball player, as an Olympian, and at the national team level.

Short response time

“We already have established a strong presence and have received a lot of attention here in Iceland. We experience that many Icelandic seafood companies now are ready to take their next step with regards to digitalization, and are now in close dialogue with most of the seafood industry,” he says. .

“Many people have known about Maritech for decades, and the general response is they find it very positive that we are now really investing here. And when we are geographically present, we have a short response time and can quickly assist if something should occur. This is crucial, especially in land-based farming.”

Konrad Olavsson, Maritech's Sales & Service Manager in Reykjavik

“Icelandic seafood companies were at the forefront of early digitalization and have a tradition of being far ahead of the curve. At the same time, it is now several years since many of the early solutions were adopted. There is now a lot to gain from updating digital infrastructure and adopting new technology and cloud solutions. Today, there are also fewer and larger companies than before – with more locations, spread around Iceland and internationally. This means that one must operate in a different way. We find that many now want to take the next step in digitalization and use modern cloud solutions to operate even more profitably and efficiently in an international context.”

Aquaculture infrastructure

There are great benefits with integrated systems that can provide seamless operations and communications across the entire business spectrum – internally within the company and with other players in the value chain.

“When it comes to farming, the situation is different from the fishery companies, since the industry is so young here in Iceland. As the number of salmon farmers grows rapidly, and they are also steadily increasing in size, a lot of work is now being done to put in place all the infrastructure, processes, and technology needed to support the industry. Massive international investments are being made, especially from Norway. This gives Maritech a unique opportunity to be a total supplier of digital infrastructure to the Icelandic aquaculture industry, for example with IoT and systems for buying and selling seafood.”

Backed by a global team

The Maritech Iceland team is about to grow, and we are now looking for software specialists and technical specialists.

“We look forward to this,” says Konrad, “And we can promise that these are exciting roles. Here you get to take part in a journey where both we and our customers are developing and have high ambitions. I can really recommend working at Maritech. It’s a great culture and group of people – now we’ve become almost 120 people in 6 countries. We collaborate a lot across the borders, so you always have a solid team behind you with a wide range of expertise and experience.

Give us a nudge if you are curious, or you know someone who can fit in with us. We are primarily looking for someone who has experience with seafood processes, but that is not an absolute requirement.”

Konrad also encourages others who are interested to get in touch.

“There is a need for more people and maybe in the long term we can establish a developer team up here as well,” he concludes. “That would be nice!”

“We have been very well received,” says Sales Manager Konrad Olavsson.

Winning together

– Success always comes from hard work. Winning is never the starting point, but it is a result of the effort you put in.

Konrad Olavsson has been used to hard work since he was young. After long days at school, he spent hours in the handball hall. As a 16-year-old he started on the Icelandic national handball team. Eventually, he played professional handball in Germany.

– Working hard and always doing the best lies in our culture – both in Norway and in Iceland. Handball is about building teams and winning together, and we have taken this mentality into the business world.

When he turned 30, he decided to end his handball career in Germany. He moved back to Iceland, educated within business and finance, and worked as a Marketing Manager at Marel before moving to Norway.

– I took my family with me and worked for Marel in Norway. I also worked a few years in the finance business before we moved back to Iceland in 2013, and later became CEO of Maris.

He worked in Maris until the fall of 2020. In addition to his new role in Maritech, Konrad is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Innovation and Business Management.

Innovative seafood companies

Konrad says he is looking forward to becoming even better acquainted with the Icelandic seafood industry, which he describes is very advanced technologically.

– The Icelandic seafood industry is innovative and at the forefront when it comes to adopting new technology. This suits Maritech very well. We are leading when it comes to software development, and an important advantage of Maritech is that we have solutions for the entire value chain, not just parts of it.

Konrad is an Icelandic Norwegian, born and raised in Iceland with his Norwegian parents. He has spent a lot of time in Norway visiting his family.

– I am extremely happy that I am given the opportunity to give Maritech a proper foothold in Iceland. It is an advance to have a strong connection to Norway, and it gives me insight to know both languages and understand both countries from the inside, says Konrad.

– A very good feeling!

He also believes that his varied background is beneficial to include in the new role.

– Maritech works throughout the value chain, and it requires knowledge of the processes for seafood, but also of the financial parts and the market. The broad background will be useful to both me and Maritech. They grow quickly and are pioneers in their field. This mentality suits me very well.

– We are delighted that Konrad chose to join Team Maritech! His varied and solid background and his large network makes us confident that Iceland and the seafood customers in Iceland are in the best hands, says CEO Odd Arne Kristengård in Maritech.

Konrad is settled in at Maritech´s new office at the Iceland Ocean Cluster at the port of Reykjavik.

– I have a very good feeling about this! And my gut feeling rarely fails, Konrad smiles.

Finally: It’s the European Championship final; Iceland against Norway. Who are you cheering for?- I cannot really lose. It is guaranteed a victory, laughs Konrad.
